James I. “Jim” Winningham, age 80, of Shelby, died Sunday, December 22, 2024 at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Jim was born September 20, 1944 in Tallassee, AL to James E. and Ruth A. (Newman) Winningham. He graduated from Auburn High School in Auburn, AL and attended Auburn University from where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering.
Planes, flying, and anything to do with them always piqued Jim’s interest. A pilot himself, Jim had also enjoyed flying model RC airplanes. A jack of all trades, Jim was a “walking Google” and paid close attention to a variety of topics. He had a love for music, both listening and creating, and especially enjoyed listening to bluegrass and traditional southern gospel. A self-taught pianist and harmonica player, Jim would often play along to songs he was listening to. Additionally, he enjoyed fishing.
Jim is survived by his children: Tim Winningham of Lexington, Tom Winningham of Columbus, Deanna (Nick) Bailey of Shelby, Vronda Brown of Shelby, Elizabeth Stigall of Shelby, Jeremiah Sexton of Plymouth, Steven (Pat) Sexton of Columbus; and numerous grandchildren, including his grandsons: Timo and Tanner Winningham. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Lola Kay (Waldruff) Winningham, and second wife, Sally F. (Shepherd) Winningham.
Per Jim’s request, calling hours and funeral services will not be observed. Care for Jim and his family is being provided by the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Online condolences may be made on the funeral home’s website (PenwellFuneralHome.com) or their Facebook page (Facebook.com/PenwellFuneralHome).

We enjoyed hearing Jim sing and play harmonica at church. He was always smiling and was a wealth of information. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the family.
We enjoyed visiting with Jim and Sally. We would sometimes play cards and eat dinner together. Most of all I enjoyed serving the Lord with them. They both will be missed. Praying for the family.
Jim always had a smile when I seen him. I enjoyed hearing him sing ” you got to walk that lonesome valley”. I really enjoyed seeing Jim & Sally at Church. They usually sat in the same seat. I think of them often. I miss them both. May God embrace the family with strength and comfort. Love you.
