Ophelia Anne Delise, age 2, was born on August 10, 2023, in Mansfield, Ohio, to Justin M. and Blythe E. (Caldwell) Delise. She passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at OhioHealth Shelby Hospital. Ophelia carried a presence far larger than her physical size—one marked by determination, awareness, and a fierce, unmistakable spirit.

Ophelia was incredibly present and perceptive, always aware of what was happening around her. She knew exactly what she wanted and had no hesitation in making it known. Whether choosing a toy or selecting a book, she would carefully point, turn pages, and guide others until her wishes were understood. Her intelligence and intentionality were evident in everything she did.

Though she did not walk or speak, Ophelia communicated beautifully in her own ways. She was not passive in life. She actively participated in her own care, proudly helping in all aspects, consistently showcasing her independence. While her physical stature was small, her personality was anything but. Ophelia was strong, fierce, and self-assured.

She loved Ms. Rachel and Super Kitties and delighted in all things cats and kittens. Her favorite companion was her beloved stuffed cat, Kiki, her constant comfort and cherished friend. Like many children, she formed a deep attachment to one special stuffed animal, finding joy and reassurance in Kiki’s presence. And Kiki was in fact present in everything—family portraits, meals, trips, and all adventures.

Ophelia was affectionate and deeply connected to those she loved. She would pull people close, hugging them tightly to her chest. One of her greatest joys was her brother, Rowen. Together, they shared a bond uniquely their own, communicating through silhouettes and laughter, creating a language and cadence that no one else could replicate.

She loved to read, especially books about mermaids, and enjoyed going out to eat. Salty snacks, particularly tortilla chips, were among her favorite treats and always brought her happiness.

Ophelia’s life was defined not by what she faced, but by who she was. While she lived with medical challenges, they only served to highlight her resilience, strength, and determination. She showed everyone who knew her that her spirit far exceeded physical limitations.

In addition to her parents, Justin and Blythe, brother, Rowen, and favorite stuffie, “Kiki”, she is survived by her paternal grandparents: Gary and Nicole Delise and Ann Vallandingham; maternal grandparents: Robert and Traci Caldwell and Clara Bayer; paternal great grandmother: Patricia Vallandingham; her aunt: Sarah Delise; her uncles: Evan and Ethan Caldwell; numerous great aunts and uncles; and many special caregivers who have touched her life both at home and in the hospital. Ophelia was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather: Mark Bayer; and maternal great grandmother: Lorraine Lindl.

Family and friends are welcome on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 from 4-6 pm at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will immediately follow at 6 pm.
