Sandra Rose (Girardot) Young departed the earth from Columbus, OH on January 17, 2025 at 1:13 pm.

Sandra was born on February 22, 1937 in Maples, IN to Dortha (Smith) and Earl “Bud” Girardot. She attended elementary schools in Besancon, Monroeville, and Hoagland, graduating salutatorian from Hoagland High School in 1955 and earning a scholarship to St. Francis College in Ft. Wayne. She studied English for one year before finding employment as a secretary at International Harvester, where she worked until her marriage to Donald Young (parents, Fremont and Hazel (Dager) Young) on June 4, 1960.

Sandra and Don were blessed with six beautiful and accomplished children over a period of ten years: Christopher D. Young and Joan (Bedard) of Chicago, IL; Carter J. Young and Carrie (Abolins) of Westerville, OH; Karen R. and Randall Hay of Bellevue, OH; Scott A. Young and Traci (Keenan) of Lakeland, FL; Amy R. and Timothy Strauss of Macedonia, OH;  and Linda J. Young of Westerville, OH.

Thirteen precious grandchildren came quickly: Elizabeth Young, Audrey Young (Chetan Raut), and Abigail Young (Alex Fortin); Matthew Young (Lauren Wetula) and Nicholas Young; Daniel Hay (Monica Oldham) and Shana Hay (Scott Baldosser); Keenan Young and Cydney Young (Zach Metz); Logan Strauss (Meghan Adams) and Lauren Strauss (Justin Schweier); and Magdalene Gray (Ezekiel Johnson) and Hayden Gray (Abbey McNair).

Great grandchildren number twelve: Emma and Elijah Hay; Quinn, Case and Leah Baldosser; Oliver and Lennon Young; Danielle and Norah Johnson; Anya Raut, Carter Metz and Elliot Gray – with another Metz and Raut expected in early 2025.

Additional survivors include her sister, Karen (Bob) Ottenweller of Hoagland, IN, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Sandra was preceded by her husband in May 2013, grandson, Nicholas, brother, Neil, and his wife, Pauline Lobsiger, three brothers-in-law, and 1 sister-in-law.

Sandra’s family is her legacy. She was proud of all of them, their achievements and their accomplishments. She was intimately engaged in all the family activities, events and gatherings. Sandra was an active member of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and choir and was also active in many activities in the Shelby community including: The Blackfork Players, Meals on Wheels, Shelby Garden Club, Foreign exchange student host, Little League concessions, Girl Scout cookie campaign, and Shelby Hospital Gift Shop.

Sandy enjoyed cooking, gardening, singing, Shelby Whippet theater and athletics, watching Jeopardy and dining out with friends. Her favorite mantra was: Good, Better, Best; Never Let it Rest; Till your Good is Better, and Your Better Best!

Family and friends are welcome on Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 4-7 pm at the Penwell Funeral Home,168 West Main Street, Shelby, OH 44875 where a rosary will be recited at 7 pm. Sandra’s Funeral Mass will be Friday, January 24, 2025 at 11 am at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 29 West Street, Shelby, OH 44875 with Rev. Fr. David E. Gwinner, Senior Vicar, Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Westerville, OH celebrating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
