Charles Russell “Chuck” Miller, age 92, of rural Mansfield, died Thursday evening, October 8, 2026 at his home following a brief illness.

Chuck was born August 23, 1934 in Huron County, the son of the late Edward and May (Bird) Miller. A 1953 graduate of Shiloh High School, Chuck enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country for nearly three years, including time stationed in Japan, before being honorably discharged. A lifelong farmer, Chuck also worked as an over-the-road truck driver.

Throughout his life, Chuck had a special place in his heart for children. Even while stationed in Japan, he served as a Boy Scout troop leader for children of military families and volunteered at a local orphanage. On September 21, 1958, Chuck married Dorothy A. Love, and together they raised four children. As their family grew to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren, so did the joy Chuck found in being surrounded by those he loved. Children truly held a special place in his life, and his affection extended well beyond his own family. Known throughout the community as the “Candy Man,” Chuck always seemed to have candy on hand, ready to share with any child he encountered. It was a simple gesture, but one that reflected his generous heart and the genuine happiness he found in bringing a smile to a child’s face.

Chuck was a member of AMVETS Post 26 in Mansfield and Christ Community Church.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy A. (Love) Miller; their children: Sharon A. (Kenneth) Boyce of Mansfield, Gary L. (Annette) Miller of Greenwich, Larry G. (Barbara) Miller of Ontario, and Scott C. Miller of Shiloh; grandchildren: Amanda (Jorden) Seiter, Tiffany (Gavin) Adkins, Andy (Brooke) Miller, Jillian (Nick) West, Olivia (Shane) Berner, Dakota (Cierra) Miller, and Steven Miller; great-grandchildren: Adley, Owen, Ace, Huxon, Blake, Delaney, Jackson, Annaleigh, Sawyer, Amelia, Lorelei, Maia, Cyrus, and Halle; sisters: Connie (Edd) Smith and Bonnie Farner; sister-in-law: Clara Kissel; and numerous other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his brothers: George Miller and Tom Miller; and sister: Mary Clark.

Family and friends are welcome on Tuesday, October 13, 2026 from 4-7 pm at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at 11 am at Christ Community Evangelical Free Church, 1272 County Road 758, Ashland, OH 44805, where guests may also visit one hour prior to the service from 10-11 am.
