Shirley Ann (Studer) Whisler Sheridan, age 94, of Shelby, died Thursday evening, May 28, 2026 in Avita Ontario Hospital’s Emergency Department. Her unexpected death follows a short illness.

Born August 8, 1931 in Mansfield, she was the daughter of the late Roma and Margaret (Peiffer) Studer. Shirley graduated form St. Peter’s Catholic High School in 1949. On September 8, 1951, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Mansfield, Shirley married Carl Francis Whisler. They celebrated 34 years of marriage before his tragic passing on September 11, 1985.

Throughout her life Shirley had been employed with the late Attorney Rex Larson, the cost department at Mansfield Tire and Rubber, and Bank One in Mansfield from where she retired. She remarried on October 23, 1998 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby to widower, James William Sheridan. Shirley and Jim have celebrated nearly 28 years of marriage.

A lifelong Catholic, Shirley was a longtime member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby and its Altar and Rosary Society. She also sang in the funeral choir for many years. Additionally, Shirley was a member of M.O.M. League and the Willard St. Francis 55 Plus Club. Shirley had a passion for music and also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, and baking.

Shirley cherished and loved her family. Surviving are her husband, Jim; daughters: Peg Thornton of Galion, Becky (Lee) Wilkins of Shelby, and Lori Switzer of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren: Scott (Michelle) Thornton, Amber VanHouten, Brittany (Aaron) Shumate, Heath Wilkins (Jackie Barker), Chad Wilkins (Jaime Roush), Jennifer (Alec) Covington, Carl James “CJ” (Monica) Switzer, Stephanie (Jordan) Berman, and Lori Sue Switzer (Vanessa Young); 18 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; her sisters: Jean Smith and Patricia Studer; in-laws: Sue (Dick) Kirkendall, Rosemarie Little, and George Whisler; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and first husband, Carl, Shirley was preceded in death by her son-in-law: Carl Thornton in 2009; grandson: Michael Switzer; and brother-in-law: James Smith.

Family and friends are welcome on Thursday, June 4, 2026 from 10-11 am at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby. Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 11:30 am at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 29 West Street, Shelby with Fr. Chris Mileski celebrating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary School, Shelby.
