Viola Sue Kollar, age 77, formerly of Shelby, died Thursday morning, August 20, 2026 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.  Her death follows a period of declining health.

Viola was born July 20, 1949 in Shelby, the daughter of the late Robert H. and Pearl O. (Fisher) Kollar.  Viola grew up on a farm outside of Shelby with her 7 siblings and went on to graduate from Shelby High School in 1970.  She spent her working career at Richland Newhope in the micrographics department where she performed various jobs.

Viola was certainly a people person and knew no strangers. She loved seeking out others and making new friends, something that came easily to her. When Viola considered you a friend, she loved you fiercely although, with her strong personality, there were certainly times she could feel just as strongly in the opposite direction. That honesty and spirited nature were simply part of what made Viola, Viola.

As much as she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, Viola also treasured her independence and alone time. She was perfectly content sitting in her room watching her favorite movies.  She also enjoyed reading, especially inspirational books and working on crossword puzzles. She always looked forward to holidays and family gatherings and enjoyed taking one-day trips, or what she called her “mini vacations,” to different places, including trips to the lake. For Viola, though, one day away was usually just enough, as she was always happy to be back home for the night.

Viola took pride in looking her best and looked forward to any occasion when she had the opportunity to dress up. Dances were always something to look forward to, including the special “Night to Shine” events. Anytime there was an occasion to wear a tiara, she proudly did because a little (or a lot) sparkle suited Viola perfectly. She also enjoyed gardening and visiting the bird sanctuary, where she could watch the birds and help care for the bald eagles.

One of Viola’s proudest accomplishments came in 2009 when, at the age of 59, she wrote and illustrated her own book, Follow Your Dreams. Dedicated to her very special niece, Angie, the book was created to advocate for people with disabilities and was a meaningful reflection of Viola’s creativity, determination, and desire to encourage others.

Creativity was an important part of Viola’s life. In addition to writing and illustrating her book, she enjoyed painting and other artistic activities. Trips to the local library were especially enjoyable for Viola, where she would spend time making various crafts.

Another very special chapter in Viola’s life was her love for Joe H.  Viola and Joe celebrated their special bond and the love they shared with a commitment ceremony in August of 2022.  It was a day filled with happiness, excitement, and love when Viola truly felt like a princess.

Viola is survived by her siblings: Bob Kollar of Ravenna, Jim (Barb) Kollar of Loudonville, and Lona Seibert of Shelby; numerous nieces including Angie (Ken) Kanouse of Madison nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, friends and the love of her life, Joe H. In addition to her parents, Viola was preceded in death by her siblings: Mark Kollar, Sharon Hartge, and Nick Kollar.

The family would like to thank A Silver Lining for the love, support and care they provided Viola. 

Family and friends are welcome on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 from 10 am-11am at the Penwell Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where funeral services will immediately follow at 11am. Pastor Brian Phillips will officiate the funeral. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Sulfur Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to Penwell Funeral Home to cover the cost of a headstone for Viola.
